What did you do with your kids?
I found out that they were smoking when they were 13. I wasn't a smoker back then. I actually started because of that lol.

In my opinion, if a teenager wants to start smoking, there is NOTHIGN a parent can do to prevent it.
And in my experience, it's better if you know about it and can talk about it with them.

If he really wants to start smoking and you help him start you must realize a lot of people will not understand it.

Good luck.

Hi Ned,
Thank you very much for the advice!
I agree with you. I will talk to him tomorrow during dinner, and I will support him if he wants to start.
And I don't care what people think, I just want my boy to be happy.

Good luck Craig,

In my opinion 12 is a little young to start smoking but if he really wants to he will, with or without your support, so I think the way you are handling it is best.

It kinda seems to me like your son may be smoking already. The fact that he stares at you may be him secretly craving a cig and since you say he's acting shy may mean he wants to tell you or ask you for a cig or something but doesn't know how to go about doing it.

How did the dinner talk go - did you find out what's going on?

I am a single father, I live with my 12 year old son in Vancouver, Canada.
I often smoke in front of him (I sometimes smoke indoors, like at diner, watching TV, anytime really), and he told me before that it doesn't bother him, and he even likes the smell.
However, I have noticed recently that whenever I light up, he changes his behaviour, he stares at me, and acts like he's shy or something.
He says that nothing is wrong, but there's clearly something going on with him.
How do you think I should approach this?
Craig,

Just ask him. Like you I have always smoked in front of my kids, I have two boys. My wife does not smoke but I warned her the kids might copy me and start smoking. Last year, my oldest Kieran, started to behave a lot like your son whenever I smoked in front of him and I wondered what was going on. Well I found out after a couple of weeks when my dad marched him in one day and said, guess who I caught smoking. Ok I had expected he might try smoking one day but it still came as a surprise as he was only 13 at the time. So you smoke now Kieran, I said, sometimes dad but not every day and all the time like you.
Well he does still smoke and now a year later of course he does smoke every day and about a pack every two days. He is not allowed to take his cigarettes to school and only smokes when he is home.

Hey guys,
Sorry for my absence, I had to delay the talk, but I finally had it.
Turns out that he is interested in smoking, and no he has never smoked before.
He actually cried a little bit when he told me he wanted to smoke, I think he felt ashamed, and I said to him that he shouldn’t be.
I promised him that on his birthday (next week, 10/17), I would do something for him about that.
What do you guys think I should give him on his birthday? I have some ideas but I would like to hear your opinions.

What about showing him how to smoke, so he can try and decide if he likes it? Or did you think more about physical items? What are your ideas?
