Default Change in Priorities

Has anyone here observed a non-smoker become a smoker, and noted his or her change in priorities?

The daughter of one of my friends (a sole custodian) recently made the switch. It was the first time I observed a non-smoker become a smoker, and I must say, it was most interesting. She was told in advance, both from me and her mother, how addictive smoking is, and how unforgiving withdrawal symptoms are, but she didn't fully realize it until she made the switch. How she'd have to plan her life around smoking, and periodically not only make sure she always had cigarettes on hand, but that she'd be able to excuse herself, so she could go smoke. Smoking would soon be a top priority, and wanting to smoke would soon be replaced with needing to smoke. Being abashed about smoking in public would soon go away. She would also forget about being courteous with her stray smoke around non-smokers.

I became a smoker last year and yeah, it is kinda crazy how things do change.

Always having to keep a pack or maybe 2 on hand in case you run out.

Scanning an area for a smoking area or at least an area where smoking is permitted every time you're in a new area.

Like it was mentioned, excusing yourself for a smoke whenever you need one. I've become an expert at this one.

1. Don't forget your cigarettes.
2. Don't run out of cigarettes.
3. Don't forget your lighter.

All the things that a non-smoker never thinks about, but, everywhere I go now, these are essential, because if one of the above happens, the stress level increases and you have to schedule an unplanned trip to get through the day and yes, each of these has happened at least once since I started and now, I make sure that all the items are checked off before I leave the house for work, a short trip to the store, etc.

Rule #4: Keep a lighter and/or book of matches in the car, just in case you break rule #3.

Would any smoker ever break rule #1? I don't think so.

Well, they say there's always at least one exception to every rule! lol.

Come to think of it, it might be interesting to see you running around without your head ... you'll be sporting the new Sleepy Hollow "Headless Horseman" look.

You can carry this around as your 'head' instead of the jack-o-lantern:

Posts like this make me feel like part of a community and proud to be a smoker. My priorities changed big time when I became a smoker... I wake up extra early to make sure I can smoke a few before I have to leave for work, I only go to bars that have smoking patios, I mostly hang out with other smokers (which wasn’t planned, it just kind of happened). I guess I’m totally cool with the fact that my priorities changed because I love cigarettes and I’m proud to be a smoker.
