Although I already smoked last Christmas nobody in my family knew yet. This year I will be able to smoke at the Christmas dinner at my grandparents house. My grandparents already know I am a smoker and my grandfather was really relaxed about it. From him I learned that one of my cousins also started smoking this year or as my grandfather put it at least two of my grandchildren are smoking now not counting the ones who are still in hiding, my younger brother is one of those. I wonder if my aunts and uncles even notice my smoking.

I don't know how much things have changed in the last 35 years or so, but when smokers are a majority of the extended family, they adjust to a new smoker in their midst almost instantaneously. It's not a big deal. Of course, it is on the major holidays, or weddings and funerals, that we come out with aunts, uncles, cousins. etc.

The first time I smoked in front of the extended family was at a cousins wedding. After the ceremony as we stepped outside I lit up as did most of the smokers. The smokers were pretty ok with my smoking but the non-smoking relatives of course had to make all kinds of remarks.
