Default buying cigs in USA

Just wondering being from UK if in the USA when buying cigs in shops you ask for the number you want then the brand eg "20 Marlboro reds please" as this is how it works in britain. I read a book by bill bryson about livin in the UK and he thought that everything in shops was numbered like in a takeaway after he heard a guy ask for 20 no.6.

Oh right, thanks for that. In my neck of the woods places always have packs of 10 for those low on change and nicotine. Its strange how the way you ask for cigs in shops is sort of an unwritten rule.

The anti's have made packs of 10 illegal, because it somehow encourages teenagers to smoke.
