Carrying cigarettes for the first time
I've started threads in the past about buying your first pack and where you carry your cigs now, but, I wanted to blend the two of them into this question:

How did you feel carrying cigarettes in public for the first time (in your pocket, purse, or in your shirt pocket) and what age were you at the time and what was the reaction of your friends/families/others?

Look forward to your comments.

I was around 16-17 i high school and when I brought the pack to school, I didn't want anyone to know, although a few of my friends knew that I was smoking, so I kept the pack hidden from everyone, especially teachers and the vice principal of the school.

It was more relaxed leaving school and I really didn't want my old man to find out and it was quite awhile before I told him and then he eventually told me that he started later in life.

I come from a family of smokers, so it wasn't really a problem carrying cigs at age 16 in high school and our school had a smoking area in the back, where everyone congregated for breaks/lunch and ate and smoked out there, so being a smoker had it's own advantages. I mostly carried them in my pocket at that time, since most everyone wore t-shirts.

About the only comment from friends was that I smoked Longhorn 100's and they asked why and I said that my mother smoked them and she was buying them for me and was getting a good deal on buying them and after that, it wasn't an issue.

When I had just started smoking, I felt 'cool' having cigarettes in my jean pockets - people could see the packet shape.

I never really had any reaction from people though, they knew I had started smoking so they just expected me to have packets on me.

A bit of both
I was a mix of nervous and excited. Mostly excited though, I got a bit of comforting thrill just knowing I had them in my handbag.

It was exiting. I just kept them in the console of my truck and it was very exciting. I was also a little nervous when I was 16 and smoking and driving but the love of smoking prevailed.

When I started carrying my cigarettes openly I was exited and nervous at the same time. Exited because to me it was a pretty big deal that I was now past the caring phase of what people would think about me being a smoker. Ok my friends of course already knew I smoked so did not care. The first time I walked into the place I worked on Saturdays I felt a little self conscious with my cigarettes clearly visible in my front pocket. My manager saw them immediately, wow Liam I did not peg you as a smoker. What surprised me most however was when he told me I could take a smoke break and he followed me out and lit up as well. Other people did not say anything at all.

After I got caught, part of the deal was that I'd only smoke at home. Of course, I snuck a few a school with friends, but I didn't have my own cigarettes with me. The "at home" restriction went away pretty quickly, probably after a month or two, and it turned into "whenever mom said it was OK."

The first time I had a pack with me around family was a few weeks after I had gotten caught, when everyone got together for Thanksgiving. I was super nervous (and a bit excited, but more nervous) when I lit up the first time, but my mom had told just about everyone that I had been smoking, so it wasn't a surprise to most of them.

Good feedback so far and like a few of you, yes it was exciting, but, I was nervous as ..... about carrying them and wondering what everyone would think when I pulled them out and that was difficult at first, even stepping away out of respect, but, I got through it and even though I started later, at age 25, it was still nerve wracking.

When I told my parents, I was even more nervous with a pack in my pants pocket and what are they going to say or how are they going to react when I tell them and show them an open pack and it was a big relief to get over that hurdle and I haven't any problems since then, although there were a few people that questioned me, but, those were minor inconveniences.

I started smoking over the summer when I was 14 and when I went to school after the summer I had my cigarettes in my pocket. I was very exited about being a smoker now and during the first recess when I went to the place the smokers congregated and I took out my cigarettes and lit up, I felt very cool.
Wow Jürgen you are a smoker now, my school friends who I had not seen over the summer said. Made me feel very cool.
