Thumbs down School Smoking

At my school here in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada, smoking was allowed in the teacher's lounge for staff, and anywhere on outdoor property for students in the 80's. The 90's led to the changes of smokers having to smoke in a designated area behind the school and nowhere indoors. The year 2004, smokers no longer had their smoking pit and were forced to either smoke on the front sidewalk, along the nearby highway or in their own vehicle in the parking lot. NOW, in 2010, we can no longer smoke in our own vehicles. Over the past three decades they've stomped on our rights. In Saskatchewan, the average winter day (which IS coming up over the next few months) is -25 degrees celsius. Smoking outside in that is fucking apeshit but we used to be able to smoke in the sanctity of our own vehicles with heated seats and heating vents. I think their master plan is to hope that we all die of hypothermia so they can finally finish off the smoking race with one final knockout punch: NO SMOKING ANYWHERE. Any thoughts? Thanks. :P

Yes, they are gung-ho at schools now. I graduated high school in 1990 and college in 1994 and I remember students could smoke in the break room and an area outside at both locations. Teachers could smoke in their lounge and also in their office at college. The principal's office also was a smoking area. I can remember being an office runner in the 11th grade and sitting in the pricinpal's secretary's office having a smoke with her while waiting for my next errand. Boy those days are long gone.

In junior high students had to go out back and smoke. They weren't supposed to but everybody turned a blind eye to it. I remember my 8th grade english teacher going up on the roof to look for students hiding up there smoking and of course he had a smoke while up there, LOL!

They really should worry more about kids bringing a gun to school instead of them smoking a cigarette but here in Bracko's communist regime what can you expect?

Wow that is insane. I would still continue smoking in the car. Who the hell are they to say what you can or can't do in your own property. Unbelievable.

I'm am so sick of smokers being treated like 3rd class citizens.

Your history of your school district's policy on smoking reflects my experience.
I remember the days when I could smoke in the teacher's lounge.

Now, in my district, just having any form of tobacco on your person, is a violation of school district policy.

Default School smoking

We had one spot they would allow us to smoke

at in our school back in the 70's..They called it cancer corner.

But if we were on the other side of campus we'd have to

go out on the sidewalk and act like you were just getting to school,

to have a smoke, then when we got to be seniors we

got ballzy and smoked where ever... I remember smoking

on the steps leading into a portable, and blowing

smoke out in the classroom....

I went to a boarding school in the late 80's and we had a smoking lounge for students that were 18 and over. Now you had to have your parents permission to smoke but there was never anyone there checking. It was great! Smoking in the basement of the school, now that's liberty

Default The times they are a changin'

My freshman year of high school they designated two areas as smoking sections for students. This was done to prevent students from heading off-campus to a vacant lot, littering the ground with cigarette butts or sneaking a smoke in the bathroom.

We were told that we need a permission slip from home to be in the smoking section, but in 4 years no teacher ever asked for one from anyone that I can recall. I guess no teacher wanted that job.

Although I haven't been back since graduating, I'm fairly certain these areas no longer exist on campus. Even though I smoked as a teen I don't think I'd want the school district condoning teen smoking. As for taking away the priviledge of teachers being able to smoke on campus, it's no different than most other businesses. Yes, I'm still allowed to head out to the butt-hut on my break, but rumors have been going around for a while that we may soon have to be off company property to light up.

In the 20 plus years I've been here we've gone from smoking at our desk, to a designated break room to outside. When the company put up the butt-hut many of the non-smokers complained about it being a waste of money.
