Fellow smokers at cigreviews, I believe most smokers don't know about this. It is going to be a total surprise to most smokers if this gets enacted. I signed the petition against HR1676 which was the house bill that was put forward by Anthony Weiner and passed earlier this year. That petition had 24,000+ signatures on it. I believe nobody in Congress ever saw that online petition. Definitely sign the petition at the URL above anyway.
Only a mass of phone calls to the DC switchboard and asking to speak to YOUR US Senator from YOUR home state will do any good at all IMHO. You must be a registered voter with a good address to be validated. You can't expect anyone to listen to you if you are calling a Senator from another state other than your own state and they can't verify that you are a bona fide constituent.
When you call, be sure to give the name and number of the bill you are calling about - S.1147 - the PACT ACT of 2009 and then state your position. Do it clearly and concisely. Don't lose your temper and act like a goofbag. Figure out what your position is and just state you position. Do it with both your state senator phone numbers and do it twice. Do it everyday.
Emailing these senators does absolutely nothing since they do not read the emails. All these senators have armies of mostly non-smoker support personnel that intercept the emails and these same support workers many times have their own anti-smoker agendas. Hand written letters have the most pronounced effect. You have the right still to voice your opinion. Be a part of the political process. If you do nothing, you will suffer for it when this bill passes. Do it today.
IF YOU are a bona fide constituent and you have a friend or relative whom personally knows one of these senators, try to arrange a contact or meeting.
I believe most Postal workers will also be surprised by this. I would ask you to join the Postal Employees Network and make posts on there about this bill and what it will do to the package mail volume at the USPS. Type postalemployeenetwork into your address bar and push Ctrl+Enter and you will go to their website.
I wish you all the best in your efforts to stop this.
