| This petition has a lot to do with smokers rights. Since a lotta smokers think Big Tobacco turning their brands to FSCs without the smokers voicing their opinions first (before the FSCs were released to the public) is a violation of a smoker's American rights. The smokers I read comments from DO have a point on "I have the right to choose if I wanna buy normal Marlboros, or FSC Marlboros! How come we can't have this choice as Americans? BRING THE NORMAL CIGS BACK!!" The petition can be found (and signed) at this addy you can copy/paste. You can google for "Repeal fire-safe cigarettes petition" or you can even search my blog for it. | I'm sure all of the online AND offline Native smoke shops would love the idea of welcoming ex-FSC smokers as their new customers. I notice traffic at the online Native shop i brought up on this site has seen an increase in visitors in the past few weeks. Here's the first online article I found dealing with a fire being caused by a FSC. Look at the end of my comments. Antis will claim this smoker (in the article) was careless. But he died cause he obviously thought his fire-safe cig went out on its own (as it's supposed to). But he was wrong. And now, FSCs are responsible for killing a smoker. ![]() At least this is proof that they AIN'T fire-safe cigs to begin with. They are more like fire-START cigs. *********************************** Princeton Street fire caused by fire-safe cigarette By MICHAEL MEDEIROS Standard-Times staff writer May 08, 2008 6:00 AM NEW BEDFORD — An early morning fire at 31 Princeton Street is being blamed on a lit fire-safe cigarette. This is the second New Bedford fire in two months believed to have been caused by this type of cigarette, which is designed to prevent accidental fires. Firefighters arriving on Princeton Street at about 12:57 a.m. spotted heavy black smoke pouring out of third floor front window of the building. According to Lt. Steve Medeiros, the two residents of the first floor and the family of three that lived in an apartment encompassing the second and third floors had already exited from the house by the time firefighters got there. Crews climbed up a side staircase to the third floor, where they quickly focused on the ceiling to prevent the fire from spreading. Within about a half hour the blaze was extinguished. The third floor suffered the heaviest fire damage, but all three floors suffered extensive water damage as well. The house is currently uninhabitable. "It's not a total loss, but the house is not liveable at this time," said Lt. Medeiros, who did not have an estimate on what it will cost to repair the residence. He noted that the fire was likely caused by a Marlboro Medium fire-safe cigarette left in an ashtray that was placed on a windowsill. Fire-safe cigarettes are constructed with bands of slow-burning paper that are supposed to cause the cigarette to go out if left unattended for an extended amount of time. The ashtray with the lit cigarette fell onto an unused bed, igniting it. The family, which was on the second floor of their two-story apartment, smelled the smoke and alerted the other residents of the house. No inhabitants or firefighters were injured. Lt. Medeiros said that this is the second local fire this year believed to have been caused by fire-safe cigarettes. The other occurred in March, when John Gonsalves, Sr. of Oakdale Street was killed in a fire. Officials say Mr. Gonsalves accidentally started the fire with one of his fire-safe cigarettes.

| Trouble is, the petition is at a stand still. Nothing is being done about anything. The congressman it was sent to put it on a back shelf. The petition was a total waste of time |

I'd also love to see the fsc ban get repealed but I just don't think its gonna happen. I signed the online petition but it doesn't look like its getting anywhere. |

| I think the only thing that would help repeal this nonsense law is to have sworn statements from doctors that these fsc cigs are making people sick and are more dangerous than non fsc.Of course getting a doctor to sign off on that would be like pulling teeth. This government does not care about smokers health. The anti smoking nazis started this and face it,they have more money and pull in Washington than any of us.So unless something concrete is found against fsc Im afraid we will either have to get used to them or quit.Dan |

I know what you mean. We do seem to outnumbered and outgunned, but I still think we should raise as much rukus as we can. One thing fun to do, besides blasting emails to your congressman and senator, is to hold an unlighted cigarette out in the open in a resturant or some other nonsmoking area. "Is there a law against me holding a unlighted cigarette?" |
