hey guys, first time i found this site but i was recently researching this topic. is RYO cigarettes cheaper then buying packs? i thoroughly enjoy smoking but i just cant swing the price anymore which is sad because thats the ONLY thing i buy for myself that i enjoy. ive tried electronic cigarettes and they are just not for me. but does rolling your own really save alot of money? like how much does it cost to buy the papers and loose tobacco per cigarette? say a standard pack of 20? i realize the initial investment will be more having to buy the injection machine and such but if the savings are great i would be more then happy to. thanks in advance.

From what i've read on this and other forums, RYO (or more specifically MYO) in the United States is definately cheaper. I've seen people quoting 1.75 a pack. Out here in Europe, we roll our cigarettes (rolling paper + filter tip), which uses about half the tobacco as injecting it. So despite the fact that our tobacco is more expensive, it comes out cheaper that way for us too. Other benefits of rolling your own is that after you go through the withdrawal of the chemicals in premade cigs, you actually enjoy your smoke more. Loose tobacco also burns slower (therefore lasts longer), so chances are you'll also be smoking less (saving even more money). Give it a try, and don't give up quick... you'll most likely have to try a few different tobaccos before you find the one that you like.

I have $45 in my machine, tubes $2.75, 6oz tobacco is less than $8. [I smoke pipe tobacco] I am looking at $0.75/pack. I have friends who grow tobacco herre in KY and am going to try and use locally grown tobacco....IF I can figure out which parts to use. There are 3 types of leaves on a plant. "trash" on the botttom, it is usually thin and kinds ragged. "Lugs" which is the big main leaves of the plat and "tips" which is the top leaves that are more red and smaller. It will be a trial and error process. I will have to figure how to process it and store it. When I get that figured out I will have less than $3 in a carton not counting the machine I have already bought, used and recouped my investment on. Quite a bit less than $35= a carton in the stores. No chemicals either.

$35 in the machine, $12 for 16oz. pouch tobacco (tax included, technically cigar tobacco), and $3.50 for box of tubes (carton a box). I go through between 3-4 boxes of tubes a month. So I pay max $.65 a pack.

Hey all, I use ryocigs.com. 1 pound of cigarette tobacco is $25.00 and tubes run about $3. I got a premier supermatic machine for about $50 and after my first 2 cartons it paid for my machine. With 1 pound you can get about 25 packs of cigarettes. Thats about $1.30 per pack and I love the smoke. No chemicals and additives free. Its a nice smooth, clean smoke with out the bad after taste and does not make your clothes stink.
