...I neva would've become a smoker. I can be thankful antis didn't try to ban menthols earlier in my life cause if regs were the only cigs available, I would have neva started. I bummed a few regs (Marlboro Lights in particular). But I was always more interested in menthols.

I guess one reason why most of us Blacks prefa smoking menthols is cause we enjoy tasting mint-flavored candy, gum, etc. Before I ever became a smoker, I sucked on menthol-flavored breath mints. And I knew back then if I ever smoke, me getting Newports in particular.

I never would have become a smoker if my father had of forbidden it. Instead, when he found out I was smoking, he said he would not forbid me from smoking. So, I started then and he quit at the same time and he never smoked again all the way up to when he died which was 22 years later. He used to smoke Benson and Hedges FF menthols and he would take a few drags and then put it out before it was half way finished. His ash trays were always filled with less than half smoked butts. I thought that was a waste of money to never smoke more than a few drags from each cig. Back then, smokes cost a lot less too.

I believe a pack of B&H Menthols in 1982 was only 75 cents per pack.

They probably costed less than that during the smoking days for your father (which was likely in the 60s-70s).

B&H Menthols used to be a good Newport alternative til PM changed the menthol flava in those.

While I understand cigs were a lot more cheapa back then, I agree on not seeing the point of having an ashtray filled with half-smoked butts.

I started smoking on Menthols. Salem FF were the ones that snagged me. I don't remember exactly when I switched to regs. I know that I was back and forth between regs and menthols for a number of years. Now I rarely have a menthol unless it is a specialty or novelty brand like NS Hint-o-mint or a Native menthol brand. A pack of smokes in 1974 was 20-25 cents and a carton sold for $1.65 at most stores. A pack was 10-15 cents and ninety cents for a carton on the military base. I guess the government hadn't started trying to balance their budgets with tobacco taxes yet in '74.

Newports rock my socks. A truly delicious brand of cigarette.
