Did you think about what you just wrote or were you smoking 'left handed cigs?' Whoever reaches into your pack is gonna touch the rest of the cigarettes, even if one is upside down, they still have to touch the ones next to it to get ahold of it. The sanitary explanation doesn't hold water. It's just some old tradition that's been passed down, just like throwing salt over your shoulder for luck.
