Default The times they are a changin'

My freshman year of high school they designated two areas as smoking sections for students. This was done to prevent students from heading off-campus to a vacant lot, littering the ground with cigarette butts or sneaking a smoke in the bathroom.

We were told that we need a permission slip from home to be in the smoking section, but in 4 years no teacher ever asked for one from anyone that I can recall. I guess no teacher wanted that job.

Although I haven't been back since graduating, I'm fairly certain these areas no longer exist on campus. Even though I smoked as a teen I don't think I'd want the school district condoning teen smoking. As for taking away the priviledge of teachers being able to smoke on campus, it's no different than most other businesses. Yes, I'm still allowed to head out to the butt-hut on my break, but rumors have been going around for a while that we may soon have to be off company property to light up.

In the 20 plus years I've been here we've gone from smoking at our desk, to a designated break room to outside. When the company put up the butt-hut many of the non-smokers complained about it being a waste of money.
