The sanitary explanation is just fine by me. I've seen lots of people that open the pack from the bottom and pick their next smoke from the open tobacco end. Construction workers do this all the time. People in the military do it. Farmworkers do it. I bummed a cig from a real "bum" one time and I picked from the bottom of that pack many years ago it was (38). If a lot of folks open the bottom end of the pack, maybe just as many folks flip around a few cigs from the top end too. WHY flip it around though? Just open from bottom and you don't ever have to worry about human fingers (other than your own) ever touching your filter.
